General Power of Attorney

This is where you appoint someone, usually for a specific period of time, to make financial or legal decisions for you.  If you lose capacity the appointment will end.

There is a still a place for a general power of attorney for example when you want a transaction completed but you are not going to be present personally at the time. For instance, you may want to sell a property or shares but before the sale is completed you travel overseas.  In those circumstances you can give a general power of attorney to your solicitor, agent or relative specifically authorising them to sign any documents and do all things required to complete the transaction in your absence.
